A lot of people think that to be creative you must come up with an idea that is new or fresh. That is completely wrong. You can be just as creative if not more creative if you take an idea that was already put out and you twist it or change it to make it your own. If you can do that correctly it almost seems as if you did create something completely new and unique.
Being creative is not stealing ideas that have already been put out. Even if it was an old idea that everyone forgot about, its still not creative for you to reput it out there. To be creative you can never steal an idea from other people.
Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That's because they were able to connect experiences they've had and synthesize new things.

Nick,
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts. I really think you are on to something when you write, "You can be just as creative if not more creative if you take an idea that was already put out and you twist it or change it to make it your own. If you can do that correctly it almost seems as if you did create something completely new and unique."
While there is a difference between plagiarism and homage, we still all find inspiration from things we see and experience in order to make our own views and ideas.
I hope you find inspiration from things you consume AS WELL AS things you personally experience... I think that makes the successful creator stand out from a good creator.
I adore the Steve Jobs quote, I've never heard it but I agree entirely.
